The Time Out Program (TOP) provides an opportunity for you to take a leave from the university for a semester or a year without losing your place in your current college or school.
- Before applying: You must be a degree seeking student at the University of Colorado at Boulder. You cannot be on academic suspension from your college, or have an active ethical or disciplinary stop and be on the Time Out Program. The School of Education, College of Engineering and the School of Music require a minimum 2.0 GPA to apply for TOP. Graduate students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Doctoral candidates who've passed their comprehensive examinations and concurrent degree students (BA/MA/MS) are not eligible for TOP.
- Enrolled students: You CANNOT begin the Time Out Program until you Withdraw from your current classes.
- The application fee is $50 (make checks payable to the University of Colorado).

- As a TOP student you are guaranteed a place in your current college or school and major, providing you meet registration and deposit deadlines.

*The deadline to apply for TOP and be assured a continuing student registration time assignment for the next semester.
The first semester you don’t register for classes, or the semester you register and withdraw from classes is your “Start” TOP semester.Remember you’re subject to the withdrawal deadlines if you register.
The “Early Application Deadline” is the deadline to be assured of a continuing student registration time if you’re returning after one semester away. You’ll also retain uninterrupted access to your computer accounts.
The “Final Application Deadline” for a semester is the last date to apply for TOP for the semester you begin TOP. Your computer accounts may have to be reactivated. Reaffiliation takes 24-48 hours.
The “May Return” date is one semester off, returning the semester following your “start” time off term.
The “Must Return” date is two semesters from your start term - returning an academic year after the semester you begin TOP. The Time Out Program is for one academic year.
