Residency and Tuition Classification

Tuition classification determines if students should have in-state or out-of-state tuition. Your initial tuition classification is determined from information you supply on your application for admission to the university. You may file a petition if you wish to contest out-of-state classification status or if you become eligible for in-state status.

How to Obtain In-State Status

1. Check for Eligibility: Review the Tuition Classification Regulations to see if you are eligible for in-state tuition status.

2. Apply / Petition: Based on your status at CU.
   • New students - Complete the Tuition Classification portion of your Application for Admission
   • Continuing Students - Submit a petition using the Petition Packet.
   • Former Students who attended within the last three years - Submit a petition using the Petition Packet.
   • Former Students who attended more than three years ago - Complete the Tuition Classification section of your Application for Admission.
     
     
3. Appeal: If the Tuition Classification Officer denies your petition, you may appeal to the University Tuition Classification Review Board.
